Wireless Network Tutorial

This wiki page shows how to build an outdoor wireless network:

  • High gain directional antennas
  • bridges/access points wireless - WAP54G e WRT54G (Linksys) and Zinwell G-120
  • PCI wireless network card
  • coaxial cable RGC-213
  • connector N (and how to assembly it)
  • connector F
  • pig tail SMA e TNC (linksys)

Introduction

This wiki page was created for documenting the installation of a home wireless connections. It will be detailed the how to connect a remote machine to a network and how to interconnect 2 LANs using the connection of a wireless bridge. The distance between the two location is about 1 Km.

Basic scheme of the outdoor wireless network

 Illustrated Diagram

  1. Extern Antenna: can be omnidirectional (irradiating 360 degrees horizontally), sectoral or directional. As the objective here is to interconnect two points, it were used two high gain directional antennas.
  2. Antenna cable: it’s recommended to use low attenuation coaxial cable and with at most 10m of length.
  3. PigTail: connects the antenna cable to the wireless device. It’s used to “convert” the antenna cable to the wireless device connector (which usually is quite smaller then the antenna cable connector. The Pig Tail is also a cable (rg58), but with a smaller diameter (what causes a higher attenuation) and so, it should not be longer than 30 cm.
  4. Wireless device: it can be an access point, wireless pci card, wireless bridge, repeater, etc., but it must have an external connector. Usually the device comes originally with a small antenna, you should detach this antenna and connect the pigtail on its place.

Example 1

Connecting a remote computer with a wireless pci card on the local network, through a wireless access point.

Example 2

Connecting two LAN employing one access point and a wireless bridge.

In this example, it were used the same antennas and cables from example 1, changing only the wireless devices and the pig tails.
